Dynastar Speed Zone 7 [click]
Type of ski : Men's recreational groomers
Testers' ChoiceRecommended by our reviewers!
In this category, we’re looking for accessible skis for weaker riders who have the capacity to progress technically to carving. While it’s not directly aimed at beginners, riders from the beginning of ESF’s class 2 will love the Speedzone 7 from Dynastar, in other words, riders who already master skid turns. Versatile, accessible, docile and responsive to every request, it’s truly awesome. Turn initiation is intuitive and skid turns are consistent, making it a very reassuring ski. But what really impressed the reviewers was its capacity to up the stakes, helping the rider make technical progress. The transition from skid turns to side slips then carving seems totally natural, especially on moderate slopes. You just need to get the right positioning and lean into the turn to see the skis begin to gently carve. When you step up the pace, even on hard pack, the ski remains incredibly reassuring and efficient for this category. We strongly recommend this ski for all riders who've mastered skid turns and want to progress to higher speeds and carving.

Liked: Generally accessible Good rotation Versatile Performs well in short and long turns Comfortable Great performance potential: carving, high speed ...

Disliked: Nothing special...

Völk RTM 76 [click]
Type of ski : Men's recreational groomers

Like the Speedzone 7, Völkl's RTM 76 is very accessible when it comes to mastering skid turns and will help riders advance to more technical turns. The ski is accessible from the middle of ESF class 2, in other words, once riders have mastered parallel turns. It’s slightly less accessible than the Dynastar because the tail hampers behaviour to some extent in back-leaning positions. Skiers who are well centred don’t need to worry. The ski will help riders make technical progress remarkably well. It's happy to step up the pace, with very good grip and great stability. Riders can make easy progress to carving/slicing clean arcs with little physical effort. The RTM 76 is an excellent tool for riders who've mastered parallel turns and want to move on to the next level.

Liked: Generally accessible Easy turn initiation and rotation Skid turns Good performance and carving qualities Good grip ...

Disliked: Slightly grippy and lethargic tail may hamper riders in a back-leaning position...

Head WC Rebels iShape Pro [click]
Type of ski : Men's recreational groomers
Best performance!Best performance!
A bit "overpowered" for this category, the iShape Pro from Head is not a tool for the inexperienced. It’s docile as long as you already have good technical skills under your belt. At medium speeds with a well-positioned rider, it’s really easy to enter and hold rock steady turns. Entering carved turns is intuitive and the ski will hold a steady speed as it engages in relatively dynamic turns. On the other hand, the iShape Pro is far less happy in slower back-leaning skid turns, hampered by its relative stiffness and somewhat grippy tail. We wouldn’t recommend this ski to beginners. On the other hand, it’s a good choice for riders who already master carving techniques (beginning of ESF class 3) and who want an easy, progressive tool to hone their technique.

Liked: Overall performance Versatile Excellent slicing clean arcs/carving Easy turn initiation Stability ...

Disliked: Lack of accessibility Demanding both physically and technically ...

Elan Amphibio 80 Ti [click]
Type of ski : Men's recreational groomers

The Amphibio 80 Ti deserves its place in this selection of the best skis on the market. The reviewers came back enthusiastic, particularly impressed by the model’s overall accessibility and easy rotation. The ski is simple to use, enjoyable and its overdrive feature is reassuring for less experienced riders. Behaviour is globally good and consistent with really smooth carves that are very easy to initiate. There was just one small criticism; some reviewers felt that it lacked comfort and consistency in skid turns. The Amphibio 80 Ti is a ski that makes you want to improve and allows riders who can already manage traverse rides and the snowplough (ESF class 1) to advance to turn initiation and carving (ESF class 3).

Liked: A highly user-friendly ski Easy rotation Versatile Facilitates carving A very progressive ski that makes you want to improve ...

Disliked: Skid turns Lacks grip and stability in dynamic turns ...

Rossignol Pursuit 600 [click]
Type of ski : Men's recreational groomers

In this category, we’re looking for skis that are accessible to the weakest learners but that can help slightly more experienced riders move on to more technical turns. Here, Rossignol's Pursuit 600 fulfilled the first part of its contract but fell somewhat short in the second. True, even the weakest riders will find the ski very easy to handle. In particular, the ease of rotation and floating effect will please all those who’re still finding it hard to change direction. Skid turns are consistent and easy to steer. On the other hand, the ski is less happy when you step up the pace. Very flexible, it struggles to remain stable and retain pressure at high speed. In addition, its overdrive effect that’s very welcome at low speeds, becomes more problematic when we hit the accelerator in more dynamic turns. The Pursuit 600 is a good initiation ski for riders with a little experience (ESF class 1) to moderate speed carvers (beginning of class 3). It’s also an excellent model for riders looking for a tool that’s really easy to handle and requires very little physical engagement for cool cruising on the groomed piste.

Disliked: Very flexible, loses stability at medium speed The overdrive effect means that more experienced riders will need to hold back the pressure ...
